THE ENGINE:

Much like the Porsche 959, the Outback 3.0 has a 3 liter 6 cylinder 24 valve DOHC boxer engine delivering 212HP to all four wheels. The four cylinder Outback comes with a SOHC EJ25, which can trace its ancestry back to the nineteen eighties. In the subsequent years, technology has advanced enough that six cylinders, timing chains, twin cams, and three radiator hoses have gone from the realm of science fiction to an automotive fact of life. The days of single cams per head four cylinders and the other shameful hallmarks of an economy car are gone, and in their place lies a modern engine with four cams, six cylinders, and performance worthy of a supercar.
